(Bio)Process Engineering - a Key to Sustainable Development

A joint event of ProcessNet and DECHEMA-BioTechNet Jahrestagungen 2022 together with 13th ESBES Symposium

Sustainability is the one dominating challenge today. Process engineering, chemical technology and biotechnology are key to solving it: By closing cycles, increasing efficiency, coupling sectors, and exploiting the potential of renewable resources, they ensure to meet the global need for food, mobility, housing, energy and medical care while at the same time protecting resources.
In 2022, DECHEMA, ProcessNet and ESBES join forces: At the joint Annual Conference of ProcessNet and DECHEMA-BioTechNet together with the ESBES symposium, researchers from industry and science will present developments and solutions on topics such as reaction engineering, energy generation and storage, bioprocesses, synthetic biology, education and many more.

We all need answers for problems like climate change, scarcity of resources and waste generation. Innovations based on chemistry are key to finding such answers and they will change the chemical industry in a fundamental way. 12th European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Science

11th European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Science
11-14 September 2016 in Dublin, Ireland

ESBES returned to Dublin after 20 years since its very first symposium in this city in 1996. The changes over the last two decades were evident not just in the city, but also in the biochemical engineering research presented at the meeting. With over 300 attendees from over 30 countries there was no shortage of exciting new research findings.

The plenary presentations by Dr Steven Bagshaw (CEO Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies), Prof Lisbeth Olsson (Chalmers University of Technology, Goteborg) and Prof Massimo Morbidelli (ETH, Zurich) highlighted the challenges of modern biochemical engineering from biopharmaceuticals to biofuels and bioeconomy. The conference provided ample networking opportunities particularly for early career researchers, with events like Jobs / career development forum and the Young researchers event organised within the conference by the Biochemical Engineering Special Interest Group of IChemE. Industry was also actively involved in the programme with the Raw Materials Forum being run by representatives of large (bio)pharma companies and leading to a lively discussion on various aspects of raw material supply for the industry.

The conference also provided an opportunity for the presentation of the Biochemical Engineering Journal Young Investigator Award and the Malcolm Lilly Award. The former was won this year by Prof Peter Tessier from RPI, who presented an inspiring presentation on the work of his group in designing monoclonal antibodies with specific characteristics. The Malcolm Lilly Award was won by Susana Pedraza de la Cuesta from Delft University for her work on the integration of fermentation and recovery of sesquiterpenes. But the best reflection of the value of the conference for the early career researchers is provided in their own words below.

‘The highlight for me personally was the careers workshop, it gave us a chance to really understand what employers were looking for and how to avoid making silly mistakes when applying for jobs. 10th European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Science
7-10 September 2014 in Lille, France

Bioengineering and the separation of biomolecules was the main focus of the jointly organized event of ESBES and IFIBIOP. ACS-BIOT, the American Chemical Society-Division of Biochemical Technology contributed to this European symposium in cooperation with ESBES. The symposium was held in Lille, a nice cultural city of the North of France. In Lille, participants had the opportunity to visit the complete scientific program of both congresses.
The idea of this summit was to bring together the international scientific communities in these fields, to foster communication, cooperation, and cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas. This event provided a unique platform for scientists both from industry and academia to discover new science, technologies, processes and applications.

9th European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Science
24-26 September 2012 in Istanbul, Turkey

Bioengineering and the separation of biomolecules was the main focus of the second jointly organized event of ESBES and ISPPP. For the first time, ACS-BIOT, the American Chemical Society - Division of Biochemical Technology, contributed to this European symposium in cooperation with ESBES. As a premiere, the symposium took place at the same time and at the same place as ECB 15, the 15th European Congress on Biotechnology.


8th European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Science
5-8 September 2010 in Bologna, Italy

The 8th ESBES Symposium was held together with the 30th International Symposium on the Separation of Proteins, Peptides and Polynucleotides (ISPPP) and the 3rd International Symposium on Biothermodynamics (ISB). The idea of this threefold summit on bioengineering, bioseparation and biothermodynamics was to bring together the scientific communities in these fields at the same time and in one place, to foster communication, cooperation, and cross-disciplinary exchange of ideas.
