The European Society of Biochemical Engineering Sciences (ESBES) has agreed to collaborate with the Biochemical Technology Division of the American Chemical Society (BIOT).
In a three-year Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2014, ESBES and BIOT agreed to grant each organization affiliate status in the other, in order to increase the amount of collaboration between the two closely-aligned organisations.
Marcel Ottens (ESBES Board member): "We are very happy that after several years of fruitful collaboration, our mutual collaboration status has now been confirmed officially by both organizations. BIOT and ESBES align well in their focus in bringing biochemical expert from both academia and industry together to discuss highest level research, development and innovation."
Scott Banta (BIOT Executive Committee Chair, 2014): "The BIOT organization is excited about the possibilities that come from us formalizing our relationship with ESBES through the signing of this MoU. BIOT and ESBES represent the interface between academia and industry, and have a common goal of advancing understanding in the area of biotechnology so that better and more affordable bioproducts such as pharmaceuticals can be provided worldwide."
Claire Komives (BIOT Long Range Program Coordinator): "I consider it an honor to not only be endorsed by ESBES but to also have your active participation in our organization. BIOT seeks to engage top notch scientists for sharing technical and leadership strategies for both industrial and academic development communities. We need the European participation to complete the discussions".
William Kelly (Alternate Councilor for the BIOT Executive Committee and point-of-contact with ESBES): "BIOT and ESBES both take pride in developing young scientists, and both organizations look forward to initiating discussions about potential future collaborative programs and activities that aim to promote this both in Europe and the US"
The mutual affiliate status will give the organisations representation at each other's board meetings and the organizing committees of technical conferences. ESBES and BIOT also plan to hold joint events at each other's technical conferences.
This will include a joint presence at the upcoming 10th European Symposium on Biochemical Engineering Sciences and 6th International Forum on Industrial Bioprocesses which takes place in Lille, France, on 7-10 September 2014.

ESBES is the pan-European hub for the biochemical engineering sciences. Established as an independent entity in 2013, ESBES covers a broad range of fields in biochemical engineering like bioreactor performance, biocatalysis, and downstream processing as well as modelling, measurement and control. Technical disciplines meet molecular tools, European scientists and engineers from industry and academia discuss latest developments.
